Gisanga is one of the best coffee growing areas on the central Rwandan plateau. Its processing station receives 100% specialty Arabica coffee beans every year, grown by around 850 smallholder farmers, the majority of whom are women.
To supply this particular coffee, we partnered with the owners of small farms in the Mbuye district of Ruhango province to help create a tangible difference in the lives and incomes of coffee producers, especially women. Women farmers are the backbone of Rwanda, as women shoulder the bulk of the work. After the devastating genocide in 1994, many women were left widowed with children and it is they who rebuilt the country and continue to do so.
Rwanda Gisanga brings to our coffee mills the strong scent of women that accompanies every stage of production and processing and with that comes more opportunities for women and their families, fair treatment, stable income, security, education and a better quality of life. The women producers of our new Single Estate protect the coffee trees of the small farms where they are employed through sustainable and organic farming practices.
A particularly high quality coffee, with notes of citrus and cherry, fruity acidity, and high sweetness characteristic of the Red Bourbon variety.
The roast profile is omni-roast, making it suitable for espresso and filter beverage extractions.
